Hydrostatic Level Transmitter  measuring principle

Liquid level is measured by the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid itself; the level directly corresponds to the pressure.

  • FAQ

1. What is a hydrostatic level transmitter?

A hydrostatic (submersible) level transmitter measures liquid level from the pressure that the liquid exerts at the measuring point. The level corresponds directly to this hydrostatic pressure, which the sensor converts into a standard output signal.

2. How does hydrostatic level measurement work?

The sensor is submerged in the liquid, and its diaphragm senses the pressure of the liquid column above it. Because this pressure is proportional to the depth and the liquid density, the transmitter converts the pressure into a level value and outputs it as a current, voltage or digital signal.

3. Which Asmik hydrostatic level transmitter should I choose?
  • MIK-P260: standard submersible level meter for water level, well depth and groundwater
  • MIK-P260-M2: slurry level sensor with durable 316 stainless steel construction for harsh environments
  • MIK-P260-M3: fully welded structure with removable protective cap and a small Φ19 mm diameter
  • MIK-P260-M4: measures level and temperature together
  • MIK-P262-B: PTFE anti-corrosion version with ceramic pressure sensor and current, voltage or RS485 output
  • MIK-P260G: high-temperature version
  • MIK-PX261: submersible level meter for water level, well depth and groundwater

If you are unsure, send us your application details and our engineers will recommend a model.

4. What accuracy is available?

The common accuracy is 0.5% FS. Please check the product page of the selected model or tell us your required accuracy.

5. What output signals are available?

Voltage or 4–20 mA output signals are standard, and the MIK-P262-B also offers RS485 output. Please tell us which signal your system needs.

6. Where are hydrostatic level transmitters used?

Typical applications include water level in tanks and basins, well depth, groundwater monitoring, wastewater, slurry and industrial process liquids.

7. What are the advantages of this measuring principle?
  • Not easily clogged and resistant to damage from floating solids
  • Reliable with long service life, even in harsh environments
  • The diaphragm is protected from physical damage and turbulence
  • Excellent chemical compatibility for a wide range of applications
  • Not affected by foam, vapour or the shape of the vessel
8. Does liquid density affect the reading?

Yes. Hydrostatic measurement determines the pressure of the liquid column, so the level value depends on the density of the liquid. If your medium is not water, or its density changes with temperature or concentration, please tell us the density so the transmitter can be scaled correctly.

9. Can it be used for slurry and dirty water?

Yes. The measuring principle is not easily clogged and resists damage from floating solids. For slurry applications, see the MIK-P260-M2 with 316 stainless steel construction.

10. Which model is suitable for corrosive liquids?

The MIK-P262-B uses a PTFE anti-corrosion design with a high-performance ceramic pressure sensor, for corrosive media. Please send us your medium and concentration for confirmation.

11. Which model is suitable for high temperature?

The MIK-P260G is the high-temperature version. Please tell us your liquid temperature so we can confirm the configuration.

12. Can level and temperature be measured with one device?

Yes. The MIK-P260-M4 measures level and temperature continuously with one submersible sensor.

13. Is there a small-diameter version for narrow wells?

Yes. The MIK-P260-M3 has a fully welded structure with a removable protective cap and a diameter of only Φ19 mm, which suits narrow boreholes and monitoring wells.

14. What process connection is used?

A 1/2-inch NPT threaded connection is used for easy installation in pipes and ducts, in addition to free-hanging submersible installation. Added weight helps to keep the sensor in place.

15. How should a submersible level transmitter be installed?
  • Lower the sensor to a fixed depth, keeping it above sediment at the bottom.
  • Keep the cable vertical and secured, so the sensor stays at the same position.
  • Avoid installing directly in the path of inlet flow or agitation.
  • Protect the vent tube in the cable from water ingress and blockage, as it references atmospheric pressure.
  • Keep the diaphragm clean and free of deposits.

Please follow the installation manual of the selected model.

16. Hydrostatic, ultrasonic or radar: which should I choose?
  • Hydrostatic: contact measurement in the liquid; not affected by foam, vapour or vessel shape; reading depends on liquid density.
  • Ultrasonic: non-contact and cost-effective; affected by foam, vapour and dust.
  • Radar: non-contact and less affected by process conditions; also suitable for solids.
17. How much maintenance does it need?

Maintenance is generally limited to keeping the diaphragm clean and checking the cable and vent. For media that form deposits, periodic inspection is recommended.

18. What information should I provide to get a quotation?

To help us select the correct model, please provide:

  • Liquid name, density and temperature
  • Measuring range (maximum level depth)
  • Installation method (free-hanging or threaded) and cable length
  • Corrosive components or solids in the liquid
  • Output requirement (4–20 mA, voltage or RS485)
  • Whether temperature measurement is also needed
  • Quantity
