  • FAQ

1. What is the MIK-MF thermal mass flowmeter?

The MIK-MF is an insertion-type thermal mass flowmeter for gas measurement. It is based on the principle of thermal diffusion and features a compact design, digital circuitry, easy installation and accurate measurement. It helps users monitor gas consumption, analyze leakage flows and reduce energy costs.

2. How does the MIK-MF work?

The MIK-MF uses the constant temperature difference method. The probe has two sensors: one measures the gas temperature, and the other is heated and kept at a constant temperature above the gas. As gas flows past, it carries heat away from the heated sensor. The power needed to maintain the temperature difference is related to the gas mass flow rate, so the meter can calculate mass flow directly.

3. What gases can the MIK-MF measure?

The MIK-MF is designed for steady-state gases. It is not suitable for unstable media such as acetylene and boron trichloride. Please send us the gas name and composition so we can confirm suitability before ordering.

4. Can the MIK-MF measure liquids or steam?

The MIK-MF is designed for gas measurement and is not intended for liquids. For liquids, consider our electromagnetic flowmeters or Coriolis mass flowmeters. For steam applications, please contact us; vortex flowmeters are commonly used for steam.

5. Does the MIK-MF need temperature and pressure compensation?

No. The MIK-MF measures gas mass flow directly, so no separate temperature or pressure compensation is required.

6. What pipe sizes can the MIK-MF be used on?

The MIK-MF is an insertion type meter suitable for pipe sizes from DN65 to DN1000.

7. What are the advantages of an insertion-type flowmeter for large pipes?

An insertion meter uses a probe inserted into the pipe instead of a full-bore meter body. For large pipes, this usually means a lighter instrument, lower cost and easier installation compared with an in-line meter of the same size.

8. What flow range does the MIK-MF cover, and what does Nm/s mean?

The MIK-MF measures flow velocities from 0.1 Nm/s to 100 Nm/s. Nm/s means normal meters per second, which is the gas velocity converted to normal (reference) conditions of temperature and pressure. Because the lower limit is low, the meter can also be used to monitor small flows such as leakage.

9. How accurate is the MIK-MF?

The accuracy is ±2.5%.

10. What operating temperatures can the MIK-MF handle?
  • Sensor: -40 °C to +300 °C
  • Converter: -20 °C to +45 °C
11. What is the maximum working pressure?

The working pressure is up to 2.5 MPa.

12. What outputs and communication are available?
  • Analog output: 4–20 mA
  • Communication: RS485 (Modbus RTU)
  • Relay: 1–2 relays optional

These outputs allow integration with PLC, DCS, SCADA and energy management systems.

13. What power supply does the MIK-MF require?

220 VAC or 24 VDC; power consumption is 18 W.

14. What are the ingress protection rating and body material?

The MIK-MF has IP65 protection and a stainless steel body. It is vibration resistant and designed for a long service life.

15. What are the typical applications of the MIK-MF?

The MIK-MF is used for gas consumption monitoring, energy management, and leakage analysis in industrial plants. With one measuring device, users can track gas usage and identify leakage flows to reduce energy costs.

16. Can the MIK-MF help detect gas leakage?

Yes. By measuring gas flow during periods when consumption should be zero or low, the MIK-MF can reveal leakage flows in the pipeline network, helping users locate losses and reduce energy waste.

17. How is the MIK-MF installed?

The MIK-MF is designed for easy installation: the probe is inserted into the pipe through a mounting connection. Like other insertion flowmeters, it generally needs sufficient straight pipe upstream and downstream to ensure a stable flow profile. Please contact our engineers for installation requirements for your pipe layout.

18. How much maintenance does the MIK-MF need?

The MIK-MF has no moving parts, uses digital circuitry, and is designed for easy maintenance and long service life. Zero-point monitoring helps keep measurements stable.

19. What is the difference between a thermal mass flowmeter and a Coriolis mass flowmeter?

A thermal mass flowmeter such as the MIK-MF measures gas mass flow based on heat transfer and is well suited to large pipes with insertion installation. A Coriolis mass flowmeter measures mass flow through tube vibration, can handle liquids, gases and slurries, and offers higher accuracy and density measurement, typically in smaller pipe sizes. See our FCC800 and FCC-300 Coriolis mass flowmeters.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What types of mass flowmeters does Asmik offer?

Asmik offers two measuring technologies:

  • Coriolis mass flowmeters: FCC800 and FCC-300, for liquids, gases, slurries and suspensions.
  • Thermal mass flowmeter: MIK-MF insertion type, for gas measurement.
2. How does a Coriolis mass flowmeter work?

The flow tubes are driven to vibrate at their natural frequency. As the medium flows through the vibrating tubes, the Coriolis force causes a phase shift (twist) between the inlet and outlet sides of the tubes. This phase shift is proportional to the mass flow rate. The vibration frequency changes with the fluid's density, so density is measured at the same time. The transmitter converts these signals into mass flow, density and temperature values.

3. How does a thermal mass flowmeter work?

The MIK-MF is based on the principle of thermal diffusion and uses the constant temperature difference method. The heat carried away by the flowing gas is related to its mass flow rate, so the meter measures gas mass flow directly without separate temperature and pressure compensation.

4. Coriolis or thermal: which mass flowmeter should I choose?
  • Coriolis (FCC800 / FCC-300): measures liquids, gases, slurries and suspensions; high accuracy (down to 0.1%); also measures density and temperature; pipe sizes from DN1 to DN150.
  • Thermal (MIK-MF): for steady-state gases only; insertion installation; suitable for large pipes from DN65 to DN1000; accuracy ±2.5%; commonly used for gas consumption monitoring and leakage analysis.

If you are unsure, send us your medium and operating conditions and our engineers will recommend a suitable type.

5. What parameters can a Coriolis mass flowmeter measure?

The FCC800 and FCC-300 directly measure mass flow rate, density and temperature. Volume flow is calculated from mass flow and measured density, so one device can replace separate flow, density and temperature instruments.

6. Why measure mass flow instead of volume flow?

Volume changes with temperature and pressure, while mass does not. A mass flowmeter gives a direct mass reading without temperature or pressure compensation, which is useful for batching, dosing, material balance, storage and transfer applications.

7. What media can the Coriolis flowmeters measure?

They can measure gases, liquids, slurries and suspensions. Measurement does not depend on conductivity, so non-conductive fluids and viscous oils can also be measured. Typical media include crude oil, fuel oil, chemicals, solvents, food liquids and polymer solutions.

8. What gases can the MIK-MF thermal mass flowmeter measure?

The MIK-MF is designed for steady-state gases. It is not suitable for unstable media such as acetylene and boron trichloride. Please send us the gas composition for confirmation before ordering.

  • FCC-300: IP67; ambient temperature -40 °C to 60 °C; humidity 35%–95%.
  • MIK-MF: IP65; stainless steel body.
17. Does a Coriolis flowmeter need straight pipe runs?

The FCC800 requires no upstream or downstream straight pipe runs and no flow conditioning, so it can be installed in compact piping layouts. Insertion-type thermal flowmeters such as the MIK-MF generally need straight pipe sections to ensure a stable flow profile. Please refer to the installation manual or contact our engineers for site-specific requirements.

18. How much maintenance do mass flowmeters need?

Coriolis flowmeters have no moving parts and no internal obstructions, so wear and clogging are minimal. Zero-point monitoring helps maintain stability. The MIK-MF thermal flowmeter is vibration resistant and designed for easy installation and maintenance.

19. Can the Coriolis flowmeter be used for custody transfer?

The FCC800's high accuracy makes it suitable for fiscal and custody transfer applications, and the FCC-300 follows the GB/T 31130-2014 standard for mass flow measurement. Custody transfer use usually requires metrological approval under local regulations. Please contact us to confirm the certificates available for your project.
